Why your water decides your routine

Two failure modes dominate, and they split by environment:

• Saltwater: chloride ions creep into every crevice. Left unchecked, they corrode terminals, seize plugs, and wreck a sealed connection from the inside out.
• Freshwater: less corrosive, but weeds wrap the prop, silt packs the housing, and in cold climates the freeze-thaw cycle stresses seals and cables.

Saltwater routine — 5 steps

1. Rinse on the trailer. As soon as you load, spray the plug, receptacle, and terminals with fresh water. Salt left to dry is salt left to work.
2. Seal the plug. Keep the IP67 cap on whenever disconnected, and dab dielectric grease on the contacts. Our 50A plug & receptacle is built sealed — keep it that way.
3. Use tinned copper. In a saltwater hull, tinned wire resists strand corrosion far better than bare copper. Worth it for any permanent run.
4. Watch the anode. Your hull and outboard wear sacrificial anodes by design — check and replace them per the manufacturer. They protect the metal, not the battery, but a corroded hull is bad news for every connection.
5. Store dry and charged. After the season, follow the winterizing steps — ~50% charge, cool and dry, BMS still on guard.

Freshwater routine — what's different

• Clear the prop, not just the battery. Weeds and fishing line wrap the lower unit and can drag on the shaft — a freshwater-specific headache salt users rarely see.
• Silt check. Muddy launches pack debris into housings. A quick rinse after a muddy day beats a seized joint later.

Can the battery get wet?
The case is sealed, but terminals are not. Keep the cover on, route cable away from spray, and never submerge the posts. A sealed plug cap handles the bow splash fine.

Do I really need to rinse after freshwater trips?
Not every time — but after a weedy or silty day, a quick spray saves you a seized lower unit and grimy connections later.

I fish both — any extra step?
Treat it as saltwater: rinse every trip, grease the plug, use tinned wire. The salt routine is the stricter of the two.
