The story begins in Fargo, North Dakota, 1934. A man named O.G. Schmidt wasn't thinking about revolutionizing American fishing. He just wanted to build a small, quiet electric motor that could push a boat slowly through the water without scaring away the fish.
He started in his garage, winding copper wire and assembling shafts by hand. He named his company Minn Kota — a portmanteau of Minneapolis and Dakota, the two regions he called home.
The first motors were modest. Twelve volts. A few pounds of thrust. Enough to move a small rowboat at walking pace. But they had one quality that no gasoline outboard could offer: silence. An angler could ease along a shoreline, cast after cast, without the fish ever knowing he was there.
For the first few decades, trolling motors were a niche curiosity. They were the tool of a particular kind of fisherman — the patient one, the quiet one, the one willing to trade speed for stealth. Most American boaters didn't see the point. They had their Mercury, their Johnson, their Evinrude bolted to the transom, roaring across the lake at 30 knots.
Then something happened that would change American fishing forever: the bass tournament was born.
In 1967, an Alabama angler and promoter named Ray Scott held the first All-American Invitational Bass Tournament on Beaver Lake, Arkansas. He'd recruited 106 anglers from 13 states, each paying a 100 entry fee. The winner took home 2,000 and a fishing boat. It doesn't sound like much by today's standards, but it was the start of a sport that would reshape an industry.
Scott went on to found the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society — B.A.S.S. — the organization that would turn bass fishing from a regional hobby into a national obsession. Within a decade, bass tournaments were drawing crowds, television cameras, and professional anglers who fished for a living. By the 1980s, stars like Roland Martin and Rick Clunn were household names in fishing households across the South.
What competitive bass fishing demanded was a specific set of skills — and a specific piece of equipment. The tournament format often rewarded the angler who could position a boat with surgical precision, holding it in the perfect spot to cast at a piece of cover — a fallen tree, a dock piling, a weed line — without drifting away, without spooking the fish, and without making noise.
A gas outboard was useless for this. Too loud. Too fast. Too clumsy.
But an electric trolling motor? Mounted on the bow rather than the transom, controlled by foot pedal, capable of inching the boat forward in increments of inches? That was exactly the tool the new sport demanded.
The bow-mounted trolling motor — as distinct from the older transom-mounted version — became the signature tool of the American bass angler. It let one person drive the boat from the front while casting, with both hands free for the rod. It was, quite literally, the technology that made modern tournament fishing possible.
To understand why the trolling motor became so deeply embedded in American life, you have to understand where Americans fish.
The American South is built on water. Florida's St. Johns River and Lake Okeechobee. Texas's Lake Fork and Sam Rayburn. Alabama's Lake Guntersville. Georgia's Lake Lanier and Clarks Hill. Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin. These aren't small ponds — Lake Fork alone covers 27,000 acres, and the reservoirs of the Tennessee Valley Authority stretch across seven states.
Around these lakes grew a culture. Fishing camps with their aluminum docks and minnow buckets. Marina stores selling soft plastics and spinnerbaits. Bass boats — long, low, fast, designed specifically for the tournament format — became a multibillion-dollar industry, with brands like Ranger, Triton, Skeeter, and Bass Cat chasing anglers who'd spend $60,000 on a rig without blinking.
And on the bow of every one of those boats sat a trolling motor.
Fishing in America isn't just recreation. It's the second-most-popular outdoor activity in the country, after running, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The agency's most recent National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation counted over 33 million licensed anglers — a population larger than Texas. Bass is the single most targeted species, pursued by more than 10 million Americans.
To serve them, an entire economy emerged: tackle manufacturers (Berkley, Strike King, Zoom), rod and reel brands (Shimano, Daiwa, Abu Garcia), electronics companies (Garmin, Humminbird, Lowrance), and the trolling motor makers themselves — Minn Kota and MotorGuide — whose bow-mount units became as essential to a bass boat as a steering wheel to a car.
What the tournament culture created was an arms race — but a quiet one. Anglers needed every edge: a motor that ran longer on a charge, that held position better in wind, that made less noise, that could be steered with more precision.

In the early 2010s, Minn Kota released i-Pilot, a GPS-enabled control system that integrated with their bow-mount motors. Its killer feature was something they called Spot-Lock — a virtual anchor.
Here's how it works: the motor's GPS records your exact position. When the wind or current pushes the boat away, the motor automatically engages, calculating the direction and speed needed to return you to the original spot — then doing it, continuously, holding you in place to within a few feet.
For a bass angler casting at a specific laydown or brush pile, this was revolutionary. No more dropping a physical anchor that would scare fish. No more constantly correcting your position with the foot pedal. No more watching your boat drift off the structure you wanted to fish. You pressed a button, and the boat held.
Spot-Lock was quickly copied by every major manufacturer — MotorGuide with its Pinpoint GPS, Rhodan with its GPS Anchor, Lowrance with its Active Anchor integrated into the Ghost motor. Within a few years, virtual anchoring went from a premium novelty to a feature that serious anglers simply expected.
And with that shift, the trolling motor stopped being an "auxiliary" motor. For many anglers, it became the most important motor on the boat — the one that actually determined whether they caught fish. The big gas outboard on the back became little more than a way to get from the ramp to the fishing hole.
So where does the trolling motor go from here?
