SAE Sidewall Port Installation: Drill, Seal and Check Polarity

How to plan and verify an SAE sidewall connector installation on an RV, boat or equipment panel, including routing, sealing and polarity.
A dependable SAE sidewall port installation starts before drilling: choose a dry, accessible location, inspect both sides of the panel, protect the cable, add correctly sized circuit protection, seal the opening and confirm polarity with a meter before connecting equipment. The connector shape alone does not guarantee the electrical polarity you expect.
Look for a flat panel with clearance behind it. Avoid fuel lines, water lines, structural members, existing wiring and areas where gear may strike the cap. On a boat or RV, choose a position that reduces direct spray and standing water while keeping the protective cover easy to close.
The Bateria Power SAE sidewall connector uses 10AWG copper cable, a protective cap and stainless-steel mounting screws. The package includes two ports and eight screws. Those features support a clean installation, but the panel thickness, backing material and circuit design still need to suit the vehicle or vessel.
Trace the entire route from the port to the battery, controller or distribution point. Keep the cable away from sharp edges, hot exhaust components, moving hinges and high-current conductors that could cause abrasion or interference. Use a grommet or edge protection anywhere the cable passes through metal or a rough panel.
Place overcurrent protection near the power source, sized for the wire, connector, expected load and applicable installation standard. A 10AWG lead does not automatically make every connected device safe at the same current. The lowest-rated component governs the circuit.
Use a sealant compatible with the panel and connector materials. Apply enough to prevent water paths without filling the connector cavity or blocking the cap. Tighten the screws evenly. Excessive torque can distort a plastic flange or crush a thin panel.
SAE two-pole connectors can be wired differently across chargers, solar products and vehicle accessories. Disconnect the intended load, energize the port through its fuse, and measure the port with a properly configured multimeter. Identify which exposed contact is positive and compare it with the mating cable. Never assume color alone proves the final pin position.
If an extension is needed, the Bateria Power 10-foot SAE extension cable is listed as 16AWG and includes protective covers plus a polarity-reversal adapter. That adapter is a deliberate tool, not a universal fix. Verify polarity at the far end after every adapter and extension.
When the port feeds a solar controller such as the 10A MPPT solar charge controller, follow the controller’s connection order and voltage limits as well as the port wiring plan.
After the first trip, inspect the rear of the installation again. Vibration can reveal a cable tie that is too loose, a bend that rubs the panel or a screw that needs attention. Recheck polarity after any rewiring, battery replacement or adapter change.
No. The mating shape can be identical while polarity differs. Always measure before connecting equipment.
A cap helps exclude dust and moisture, but installation quality, orientation and the product’s rating determine real weather resistance.
Normally close to the power source, with a rating appropriate for the complete circuit. Follow applicable vehicle, marine or electrical guidance.
