"But lead-acid is cheaper!" — the cost-per-cycle math

Upfront price is where lead-acid wins and lithium "loses" — on the shelf. On the water, over the life of the battery, it flips completely. Here's a realistic example for a 12V 100Ah bank:

Because you can safely use almost twice the rated capacity and the pack outlives two or three lead-acid batteries, the cost per usable amp-hour over the battery's life is typically far lower with lithium. You also stop buying (and heaving) heavy batteries every couple of seasons.

This is the stat most anglers miss. A lead-acid battery should never be discharged below 50% or you wreck its lifespan — so a "100Ah" AGM really gives you ~50 usable Ah. A LiFePO4 can be drawn down to 80–100% routinely thanks to its flat discharge curve and built-in BMS. Net result:

Quick care tips

  • Use a LiFePO4-compatible charger (or a solar MPPT with lithium profile) — never a fixed flooded/AGM-only charger left on float.
  • Store at ~50% charge in a cool, dry place for the off-season; lithium barely self-discharges.
  • Fit a fuse/breaker within 7 inches of the battery — lithium can deliver huge current if shorted.
