Higher sensitivity can reveal weaker returns, but it can also make the display busier. Lower sensitivity can simplify the screen while hiding information you might want. Start with the manual's recommended setting and move a small step at a time, pausing to compare the result.
The useful setting is the one that helps you distinguish a repeatable pattern at that location. There is no single number that will be best for every depth, water condition or target. Write down a setting that works so you have a reference for the next visit.
Ask whether a target appears repeatedly and whether it occurs near a depth change or another feature you can investigate. A large symbol should not be read as a measured trophy fish. Target position within the beam and the strength of its echo can affect what the device displays.
The fish alarm is an attention aid. It is useful when you want a prompt to look at the display, but repeated beeps are not proof that every target is a catchable fish. Keep your expectations tied to what the screen can actually establish.
For a first outing, choose three safe, nearby positions you can identify again. Keep the exercise small: you are learning how the device behaves, not trying to cover an entire lake.
