Electric SUP Motor Runtime: Plan Your Battery Capacity

A step-by-step runtime planning method for electric paddle board motors using battery watt-hours, motor draw and a realistic reserve.

To estimate electric SUP motor runtime, convert the battery rating to watt-hours, compare it with the motor’s expected power draw, and keep a reserve for wind, current, battery limits, and the return trip. A simple calculation gives a planning estimate—not a guaranteed distance—because speed setting and water conditions can change energy use dramatically.

The basic runtime formula

If a battery already lists watt-hours (Wh), divide usable watt-hours by average motor watts:

Estimated hours = usable battery Wh ÷ average motor W

If the battery lists voltage and amp-hours, the nominal energy is:

Nominal Wh = battery V × battery Ah

Do not assume all nominal energy is available. The battery management system, discharge limit, temperature, age, wiring loss, and manufacturer’s recommended depth of discharge can reduce usable energy. Use the battery maker’s usable-energy specification when available.

A 450W planning example

The Bateria Power Y02 Electric SUP Motor is rated at 450W and offers four speed levels. If a compatible battery provided 500 usable Wh and the motor averaged the full 450W, the arithmetic estimate would be about 1.1 hours. That is only an illustration: lower speed may reduce average draw, while headwind, current, rider weight, board drag, weeds, and repeated acceleration can increase it.

Usable battery energy Average motor draw Arithmetic estimate
500 Wh 450 W About 1.1 hours
500 Wh 300 W About 1.7 hours
750 Wh 450 W About 1.7 hours

These examples exclude reserve and are not performance claims. Confirm that the battery is one of the compatible systems named for the motor or has been approved by the manufacturer. The Y02 page lists B1, B3, and B75S compatible battery systems and notes that battery availability depends on the selected configuration.

Plan the trip with a reserve

Do not plan to use 100% of the calculated runtime. Keep enough energy for the return leg and changing conditions. A route that feels easy with a tailwind can require more power on the way back. Paddle-board users should also retain a manual-paddling plan and stay within a distance they can safely cover without motor assistance.

Why speed matters more than many riders expect

Higher speed increases hydrodynamic drag, so the fastest setting can consume energy much faster than a relaxed cruise. The Y02 product details list four speed levels and a maximum speed of up to 9 km/h under test conditions with an approximately 100 kg load. Actual speed varies with rider weight, board type, wind, current, battery condition, and water conditions. Use those figures to understand the controls, not to predict a fixed range.

Check compatibility beyond capacity

A battery with enough watt-hours may still be unsuitable. Verify:

  • required voltage range and connector;
  • continuous discharge-current capability;
  • battery-management-system limits;
  • water protection and mounting method;
  • approved charger;
  • temperature limits and storage instructions.

Do not build an improvised adapter for an unknown battery pinout. Marine connections should remain secure, protected from water, and strain-relieved.

Reduce surprises before launch

  1. Charge the motor battery and wireless remote fully.
  2. Inspect the propeller guard, mount, cable, seals, and connectors.
  3. Confirm the board and motor combination is supported.
  4. Start with a short, close-to-shore test at multiple speed levels.
  5. Record time and remaining battery under your normal load.
  6. Repeat in calm conditions before planning a longer route.

The Y02 listing recommends more than 0.5 m of water depth and describes automatic stopping when significant entanglement is detected. Even with that feature, avoid weeds, line, and shallow obstructions and inspect the propeller area only after the system is made safe.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate range from runtime alone?

Only approximately. Speed varies with conditions, and the return trip may face different wind or current. Build in a generous reserve.

Will half speed always double runtime?

No. Speed level, motor control, hull drag, and conditions affect average power in a nonlinear way. Measure your actual setup.

Can I use any battery with the correct connector?

No. Voltage, current capability, communication, sealing, battery management, and manufacturer approval must also match.

Review the 450W Electric SUP Motor specifications and options before selecting a battery, then validate the system with a short controlled test.
