Trolling Motor Battery Setups by Boat Type: Kayak, Jon Boat, Bass Boat & More

One battery doesn't fit every hull. See the right LiFePO4 size, voltage, and plug for your kayak, jon boat, bass boat, or pontoon — plus a match-by-boat comparison table.


A 100Ah battery that's perfect for a bass boat is dead weight in a kayak. And a 50Ah that's ideal for a canoe can't push a pontoon past idle. The right LiFePO4 isn't about "biggest" — it's about matching voltage, capacity, and connection to your hull. Here's the match-by-boat cheat sheet.

1 · Kayak, Canoe & SUP — go light and portable

Small paddle craft run 12V, 30–45 lb thrust motors and have almost no storage. Weight and portability win:

  • Battery: one 12V 50Ah LiFePO4 — ~6 kg, lifts in and out easily.
  • Runtime: ~2.5–4 hrs at low speed (see our battery sizing guide for the math).
  • Connection: the fused cigarette-lighter cable with M10 O-ring terminals clips straight to the battery — no permanent wiring.
  • Optional solar: a 100W panel + 20A MPPT tops you off on multi-day trips.

2 · Jon Boat & Small Aluminum — the all-rounder

The classic 12–14 ft aluminum rig runs 12V, 40–55 lb thrust. You've got a bit more room, so size up:

  • Battery: 12V 50Ah for half-day trips, 12V 100Ah Pro if you fish dawn to dusk.
  • Plug: an Elbow receptacle keeps the cable off the transom and out of your ankles.
  • Why Pro: Bluetooth lets you check state-of-charge from the bow; self-heating helps in cool mornings.

3 · Bass Boat & Fiberglass (24V) — two batteries in series

Most bass boats run 24V, 70–80 lb thrust. That means two 12V 100Ah batteries wired in series (24V, 100Ah total):

  • Series doubles voltage, keeps Ah the same — you get the thrust without a single giant brick.
  • Plug: a Straight receptacle suits the flat panel mount behind the console.
  • Pair: use two identical 100Ah Pro cells so the BMS balances cleanly.

4 · Big Bass, Pontoon & 36V Rig — three in series

High-thrust 36V setups (112 lb) and pontoons need three 12V 100Ah batteries in series (36V, 100Ah):

  • More capacity = all-day spot-lock fishing without anxiety.
  • LiFePO4's ~95% usable capacity means three 100Ah cells deliver what four 100Ah lead-acids used to — at a third of the weight.

5 · Inflatable & Tender — grab-and-go

Dinghies and inflatables want zero permanent install. Same recipe as the kayak:

  • 12V 50Ah + the fused cigarette-lighter cable — carry it ashore to charge, drop it in to fish.
  • Keep the receptacle capped (IP67) so spray doesn't reach the contacts.

FAQ

Can I mix a BateriaPower cell with my old lead-acid?
No — never series or parallel different chemistries. Run lithium-only banks so the BMS balances correctly.

How many Ah for a full day of kayak fishing?
A 50Ah LiFePO4 gives ~47Ah usable — roughly 3–4 hours of intermittent pedal-assist trolling. Step to 100Ah if you spot-lock a lot.

24V or 36V for my bass boat?
Match the motor. A 70–80 lb motor is 24V; a 112 lb is 36V. Don't over-voltr a 24V motor.

Is the fused cig cable enough on its own?
For portable 12V rigs, yes — it has a built-in resettable fuse. Permanent installs should still add a breaker within 7" of the battery (see our wiring safety guide).
