Wondering how to charge your trolling motor LiFePO4 battery — shore power, a 12V car outlet, a solar panel, or a portable generator? A LiFePO4 doesn't charge like a lead-acid, and the wrong source leaves you stranded. Here's every method, compared, so you can pick the right one for your boat and your trips.

Why charging a LiFePO4 is different

Your LiFePO4 trolling motor battery wants a specific LiFePO4 charge profile — a different absorption voltage and cutoff than lead-acid. A plain automotive or flooded charger won't balance the cells and can leave the BMS confused. Rule one: match the charger to lithium, whatever source feeds it. Method 1 — Shore power: AC LiFePO4 charger

How: Plug a mains LiFePO4 charger into the battery at home or at the dock. This is the fastest, most complete charge.

Best for: overnight top-ups before every trip, and the only proper way to hit 100% and let the cells balance.

Watch: set the charger to LiFePO4 (not AGM/gel). Size it to ~20–30% of battery Ah (a 20A charger for a 100Ah pack) for a reasonable overnight fill.

Method 2 — 12V car outlet (cigarette lighter)

How: A fused 12V cable from a car or boat 12V socket to the battery ring terminals. Great for a top-up from the truck.

Best for: a maintenance trickle — keeping a parked battery happy, not a full recharge. A 12V socket is current-limited, so it's slow.

Watch: use a cable with a built-in resettable fuse, and never rely on it as your only charger for a deep discharge. (See the electrical safety guide on fusing.)

Method 3 — Solar panel + MPPT charge controller

How: A solar panel feeds an MPPT charge controller, which steps the panel voltage down to the LiFePO4 profile. The MPPT is the part that matters — never wire a panel straight to the battery.

Best for: off-grid trips and slow top-ups on the water or at a remote camp. A 100W panel realistically adds ~30–40Ah on a good sunny day.

Method 4 — Portable generator

How: Run the generator's AC outlet into your LiFePO4 mains charger — exactly like shore power, just mobile.

Best for: base camps, ice huts, or multi-day trips where you want a full recharge without grid.

Watch: it's the same charger rule — LiFePO4 profile on the charger. The generator just makes the AC.

Can you mix and match?

Yes — they're just different AC/DC sources feeding the same LiFePO4 charger or MPPT. A common rig: shore charger at home, solar on the water, car outlet for a quick top-up at the ramp. The cold-weather charging rule

One hard limit: do not charge LiFePO4 below 0°C / 32°F. The BMS will refuse it to protect the cells. Discharging in the cold is fine; charging is not. Store and charge at room temp. (Full detail in the winterizing guide.)

Can I use a regular battery charger on LiFePO4?
Only if it has a LiFePO4 / lithium setting. A lead-acid-only charger under-charges and won't balance the cells.

How long to charge a 100Ah LiFePO4?
Roughly Ah ÷ charger amps. A 20A LiFePO4 charger fills a drained 100Ah pack in ~5–6 hours; a 12V car outlet takes far longer and is best for top-ups.

Can I charge while the motor is running?
Not from the trolling circuit — the motor is the load. Charge from a separate source (shore, solar, generator) between sessions.

Is solar enough to recharge fully?
For most setups, solar extends the day rather than fully recharges a drained pack. Pair it with shore or generator charging for a true 100%.
